British Citizenship
The UK Border Agency website provides information about British citizenship and other forms of British nationality. It also explains whether you are a British citizen, how you can apply for British citizenship and other forms of British nationality, and how you can give up your citizenship.
Depending on your current citizenship or nationality, you may be able to apply in several ways. You should read the requirements for each type of application that is relevant and decide which is best for you.
General information
Processing time for registration and nationality categories is approximately 3 to 6 months. Applications cannot be prioritised. All registrations and naturalisations are processed by the Home Office in London.
• All applicants in Ecuador must send their application and supporting documents to the British Embassy in Quito. Do not send any application directly to the Home Office in London.
If you have any queries please contact the British Embassy in Quito.
Making your application
• Persons who apply for a registration, naturalisation or renunciations at the British Embassy in Quito must be in Ecuador at the time of application. Those currently outside Ecuador must contact their nearest Embassy or British High Commission.
• Your original documents will be sighted by the British Embassy and returned back to you within 4 to 6 weeks of receiving the application. Please ensure that you have all the correct documentation before bringing your application. Failure to bring the correct documents will delay your application.
• Once all the correct documentation has been received your application will be then forwarded to the Home Office in London for processing. We will charge you the use of our diplomatic bag fee.
• Please do not bring an application for a British Passport (C1 or C2) with your application for Registration or Naturalisation.
Dual Citizenship
Under present legislation the United Kingdom recognises dual nationality, and, if you acquire Ecuadorian citizenship, this does not affect your right to hold a British passport and live in the United Kingdom. The Ecuadorian law also recognises dual nationality.
