How to record a local marriage in the UK

If you want, you can have your Ecuadorian Marriage Certificate deposited in the records of the relevant office of the General Register Office (GRO) for the part of the UK you come from.

There is no legal obligation for you to do this, but you may find it useful since it means that once the certificate is deposited, you can obtain an official certified English-language translation of your marriage lines at any time, upon application and payment of the appropriate fee to the relevant GRO.

• If you wish, we can help you to deposit your marriage certificate at General Registry Office - GRO in the UK for record purposes.

Please note the following requirements:
• You need to legalise your original local marriage certificate at the Legalisation Department of the Ecuadorian Registry Office
• You need to make a further legalisation of your original local marriage certificate, with an “apostille”, at the Department of Legalisations of the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

• You need to translate the marriage certificate into English List of Translators.
• Once it has been legalised and translated into English, approach the Embassy´s Consular Section (or Guayaquil/Galapagos Honorary Consulates) to certify the translation.  See FEE.
• Once all the above have been completed, you can deposit this document at the Embassy´s Consular Section to be forwarded to General Registry Office - GRO . The charge for this service appears under FEES.
• Bear in mind that the marriage will not be registered in the UK. The marriage certificate will simply be deposited, which means that the original certificate will not be returned to you. Therefore, if you wish to keep an original version of your marriage certificate, you should obtain two (or more) copies from the Ecuadorian Registry Office.
• Once again, there is no legal obligation to have an overseas marriage recorded in the UK.
• Once your marriage certificate has been deposited in the UK, certified copies in English can be obtained directly from the General Register Office. A fee is payable.
• The GRO will notify you and us that the deposit has been made.
